9 a.m. Nov. 18: Bird Trek, meet at the Dickinson County Nature Center and caravan to birding sites throughout the county

6:30 p.m. March 16: Pajama Party

Come to the nature center to learn about all things green. Wear your pajamas! A fun snack will be provided.

Friday, April 20: Earth Day Celebration

Participate in a fun, family event celebrating Earth Day.

May 12-13: Wings and Wetlands Weekend

Dickinson County joins other northwest Iowa county conservation boards for a fun weekend celebrating birds and wetland species.

10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11: Insect identification class, ages 12 and older

4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7: Bee & Butterfly Festival

Our biggest event of the year focuses on our favorite pollinators, bees and butterflies. Join us and hundreds of guests for fantastic entertainment, educational speakers, take-home crafts, monarch tagging and more.


Youth camps

Register for camps starting in March 2018. Register online or at the Dickinson County Nature Center; deadline two weeks before each camp. Price includes T-shirt. Ages are as of June 1, 2018

Kayaking Adventures (ages 10-14)

9 a.m.-11 a.m. June 19-20 or June 26-27

Learn the basics of kayaking skills, techniques and safety from our certified instructor and put that new-found knowledge to use on the water.

*Maximum of six campers per session

Nature’s Fortress (ages 4-5)

9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 17-18

Learn about different animal habitats through active play and adventure.

*Maximum of 15 campers

Dig Into Adventure (Ages 6-7)

9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 31-Aug. 1

Dig deeper into the world of rocks, dinosaurs and the early history of Iowa. Students will learn through hands-on activities and observations.

*Maximum of 15 campers

Active Adventurers (Ages 8-9)

9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 14-15

Participate in a variety of hands-on outdoor activities. Learn about outdoor hobbies such as camping, bird watching, disc golf and more.

*Maximum of 15 campers


Birdwatchers Anonymous

Feb. 16-19: Great Backyard Bird Count

9 a.m. March 31 and April 28: Bird Trek, meet at the nature center and caravan to birding sites around the county.

Birding on the Green

 

7 a.m. May 7, June 4, July 9, Aug. 6, Sept. 10

Meet at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji and drive golf carts through the Audubon-certified course to document up to 60 species by sight and sound.

Pre-register, Ages 2 to 5, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., additional 9 a.m. session June-August, maximum 25 children per session
