Build a mud volcano

If it’s springtime and muddy, like it is in Iowa right now, it’s the perfect time to get outside!

Just wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and put your imagination to work with all of the fun mud around.

If you need a little inspiration, try making a mud volcano. You’ll just need a few simple, household items:

1/2 cup water
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup dish detergent
Red or orange food coloring
2 Tbsp. baking soda
An empty plastic bottle
A small shovel, hand rake or trowel

First, add the water, vinegar, detergent and food coloring to your water bottle. Do NOT add the baking soda at this point.

Put your bottle in a muddy spot and build the mud volcano around the bottle without getting mud into the opening of the bottle.

When you’re ready, add the baking soda. You can wrap it in a tissue and drop it into the volcano so that it all incorporates at the same time. The baking soda will react with the vinegar to cause the eruption.
