Families are glowing to have a good time during the premier Family Glow Walk/Run this October.
“The sun will set, and the fun will begin,” said Kiley Roth, community relations coordinator with Dickinson County Conservation. “We love to get families outside making memories together, and this event is promising to do just that. I think kids will love to participate in an outdoor event in the evening, which is a time we all usually head inside. This will be a fun experience for all ages.”
The Family Glow Walk/Run will begin at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji where families will pick up their registration materials and will take part in fun art activities and glow face painting. They will also have the opportunity to get photos with McGruff the crime dog and meet a police officer with the Spirit Lake Police Department.
Families will then head out on the 0.75-mile paved trail that leads to the Dickinson County Nature Center, along which the Bedell Family YMCA will have fun activities.
At the nature center, participants will explore an astronomy room, see nocturnal creatures, walk by glowing ponds and explore an insect room. Finally, all kids will get to make a firefly craft that will help light the path back to the art center.
“I really like the opportunity to work with other non-profits like the nature center and the Y, and this walk is a good way to promote family activities,” said Bob Kirschbaum, director of the Pearson Lakes Art Center. “That’s what we three entities are all about.”
“Plus, this is something that parents and kids are able to do together,” said Andrew Fisher, chief executive officer of the Bedell Family YMCA.
The Family Glow Walk/Run will cost $10 per person, with a maximum fee of $40 per family, and each participant receives a free commemorative T-shirt and other goodies. Download the registration form here and return it to the Pearson Lakes Art Center by Sept. 30.
The event is sponsored by the Bedell Family YMCA, Dickinson County Conservation and the Pearson Lakes Art Center with CC Screen Printing, Prime Lending, Sackett Law Firm, State Farm and the Spirit Lake Police Department with additional goodies provided by public health.
