Natural Resource Technician

$15 per hour

Open until filled

The Dickinson County Conservation Board is looking to hire a permanent, part-time Natural Resource Technician. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for those looking to get their foot in the door in the conservation field. Gain experience in wildlife area management, integrated roadside vegetation management, trails maintenance, and facilities maintenance.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Assist with all aspects of ecological restoration and management of prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna through prescribed fire, herbicide application, tree and shrub removal, and other tasks as assigned
  • Assist with park, facility, and equipment maintenance, cleaning, and repairs
  • Assist with all aspects of the integrated roadside vegetation management program
  • Assist with trail maintenance on hard surface and undeveloped trails

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Possess an interest in conserving local ecosystems
  • Possess the ability to walk, stand, kneel, crouch, reach, stoop, and climb to accomplish tasks
  • Possess the basic ability to operate mowers, farm equipment and highway and off-road vehicles
  • Possess the basic ability to safely operate power tools, chain saws, and weed eaters
  • Possess the ability to work without direct supervision
  • Possess the ability to regularly lift 50 lbs.
  • Possess the ability to communicate effectively with peers and the public
  • Possess the ability to work in difficult weather conditions when necessary
  • Possess a willingness to learn on the job
  • Possess the basic ability to operate GPS units

This is a permanent part-time position under the supervision of the Vegetation Specialist and Maintenance Technician. Work hours are flexible with some weekend and holiday work rotation. Failure to perform duties may result in termination.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Wildlife and Fisheries, Ecology, or a related field of study
  • Possess basic knowledge of Iowa ecosystems, plants, and animals
  • Possess (or obtain within six months of start date) NWCG Wildland Fire S-130 and S-190 certification
  • Possess (or obtain within six months of start date) Iowa Dept. of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in categories 1A and 6
  • Possess (or obtain within six months of start date)  American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED certification

Recycling office clerk

$14 per hour

Open until filled

Under supervision of the Recycling Manager, performs material processing, customer service, accounting, sending out monthly statements, deposits of all revenues weekly, general monthly ledger, maintain reports and filing,  as part of operations of the Recycling Center and as part of the overall operation of the Conservation Office.  A part-time permanent employee 10 – 15 hours/week for the Dickinson County Conservation Board who performs a wide variety of professional and administrative duties related to the day-to-day operations of the Recycling Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.      Responsible for filing reports and maintaining accurate files for all aspects of the department, such as bookkeeping, typing, claims, and various reports.

2.      Works with the public by answering phone calls/questions or aiding them in locating the agency that has the information that they are seeking.

3.      Assists customers with proper identification of household hazardous waste.

4.      Responsible for collection, identification, processing and documenting of hazardous waste.

5.      Performs any other duties related to the operation of the recycle center.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1.      Knowledge of and ability to use Quick Book programs.

2.      Knowledge of basic accounting processes.

3.      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with groups, organizations, the general public and colleagues.

4.      Highly organized and having problem solving abilities.

5.      Basic knowledge of environmental and conservation education principles and concepts.

6.       Ability to accept supervision and verbal and written direction from the Manager.

7.     Knowledge of Hazardous Materials.

1.      Lift, carry, push and/or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Recycling technician

$15 per hour

Open until filled

Under supervision of the recycling manager, performs material processing, customer service and maintenance work, as part of operations of the Dickinson Recycling Center and as part of the overall operation of the conservation office.  This is a permanent, part-time, less than 28 hours per week position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Waits on customers to provide service pertaining to the collection and processing of recyclable and hazardous materials.
  2. Uses tractors and other equipment to move, process, unload and load green-waste materials.
  3. Off-loads recyclable and hazardous materials from customer’s vehicles.
  4. Separates, packs and loads recyclable and hazardous materials for storage and shipment.
  5. Grades/moves gravel, dirt and snow in order to provide facility access by operating tractors, loaders and other equipment.
  6. Provides basic preventive maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment by changing oil, lubricating, etc.
  7. Performs maintenance and cleanup of buildings by using paint, mops, brooms, pressure washer, squeegee, hammer, screwdriver, power saws, drills and other power equipment.
  8. Operates tractors, trucks and material handling equipment as necessary to complete job tasks.
  9. Using computer system, responsible for office tasks associated with records for material collection and received revenues.
  10. Assists customers with proper identification of household hazardous waste.
  11. Responsible for collection, identification, processing and documenting of hazardous waste.
  12. Performs tasks associated with de-manufacturing of household appliances.

  1. Knowledge of basic maintenance as related to servicing motor vehicles and other equipment.
  2. Knowledge of techniques/methods and tools associated with carpentry, electrical and/or construction techniques
  3. Ability to operate trucks, tractors and other heavy equipment.
  4. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  5. Knowledge of computers and associated programs.
  6. Knowledge of properties of hazardous materials.
  7. Knowledge of mechanics associated with household appliances.

Any work experience providing an opportunity to acquire the skills and to perform the tasks described above, qualifications not required to apply, will provide the training needed for certification.

  1. Lift, carry, push and/or pull items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  2. Hear and speak to exchange information in person and on the telephone.

  4. Possess dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate tools and materials as needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  5. Sitting and/or standing for extended periods.
  6. Climb a stepstool/ladder to reach above shoulder for placement of materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
